Most of you have probably only read Amie's young adult works thus far, but I am here to tell you all that she OWNS middle-grade—seriously. The first book of Amie's I ever read was middle-grade, and it kicked ass, and she's only gotten better with each word she writes.

is full of so much heart and creativity, humor and pathos, that it doesn't matter whether you're typically a MG fan or not—you will love this story. You'll cheer, you'll laugh out loud, and you'll wind up on the edge of

And if all of that hasn't convinced you? DRAGONS, guys. DRAGONS.

This is a really fun book for middle grade readers - a Game of Thrones for a younger audience. I am middle aged woman and not really the target audience but I was eager to read an Amie Kaufman and understand why she is so popular. Having great success co-authoring with Megan Spooner in Unearthed and the Starbound trilogy and with fellow Australian Jay Kristoff with the Illuminae Files trilogy I was eager to see how she fares on her own. Additionally, I have had the pleasure of seeing Amie speak

Additionally, I have had the pleasure of seeing Amie speak about her inspiration for this new series and her enthusiasm and detailed research is clearly evident in this delightful new series about twins, Rayna and Anders, who shapeshift into the Island of Vallen's most dreaded enemies - Ice Wolves vs Scorch Dragons.

Never intending to catapult themselves on opposing sides these wily orphaned twins, accused of theft at the monthly Trial of the Staff, attempt to weedle their way out of strife by claiming they have wolf ancestry and they would like to be offered the opportunity to transform using the Staff of Hadda. To claim ice wolf blood, potentially transform into an Ice Wolf, train at Ulfar Academy and become one of the city of Holbard's most revered protectors, a Wolf Guard, against their arch enemies - the Scorch Dragons - sounds a great honour but really, for Rayna and Anders, it's a just a quick thinking way for these accomplished street urchins to get out of their latest pickle.

Until touching the staff causes unbelievable mayhem! A scorch dragon and ice wolf are born and the twins are separated. Anders's sister is gone. His only friend and protector has deserted him, flying theatrically away and Anders must accept his own fate, destined for the Ulfar Academy to learn how to destroy the Scorch Dragons and possibly his sister as well. How will he cope without Rayna and without a single friend in the world?

Well, friendships do form in the most unlikely of places and perhaps learning the Ice Wolves's skills against the Dragons may prove useful as a way of finding, locating and freeing his sister. This time Anders, so frequently in the shadow of his lively, quick thinking and impulsive sister, will have to call the shots and make decisions for both of them. But can he do it alone? Or will the lonely, elusive but friendly and helpful Lisabet be the new friend he can confide in?

She knows that the Scorch Dragons co-operated many years ago with the Ice Wolves to make some amazingly powerful artifacts using their highly skilled artisan skills but relationships soured after after an Ice Wolf's death, seemingly at the hands of a Scorch Dragon. Was the event indicative of all dragons or is there more to the story? Can relationships ever be restored? Many of the artifacts are fast falling into disrepair and Lisabet would like to help Anders find his sister.

But she divulges one of Ander's most secret confessions to the head Ice Wolf, Sigrid Fyrstulf? Why? How can you trust someone if they don't keep their promises? But is Anders being entirely truthful with Lisabet himself? Growing up and taking responsibility and building trustworthy friendships takes a special type of commitment and understanding. Does Anders have this ability?

An adventurous and terrifying pursuit ensues as Anders takes the opportunity to escape a rare outdoor school excursion and with the help of a failing, magic chalice attempt to find New Drekhelm - the home of the Scorch Dragons - where he fears his sister is about to be sacrificed with the impending equinox. The Dragons have been known to take children from Holbard for this purpose and it's now or never if Anders is going to save his precious sister, whatever the consequences.

The first in this new series ends with an exciting Battle of all Battles. Will Anders save his sister? Will he need to transform and if so, will he be able to produce his major weapon, his ice spear? Will his Ulfar Academy class mates attack or protect him and his sister? Will the leaders of opposing clans battle for victory or see unfolding events herald the potential for opening the negotiation table? It's beyond exciting. The descriptions, pace and unfolding drama is superb. I look forward to the next instalment with much anticipation. A very engaging author who will enthral her intended audience.
