So, to get on with the review. There is a reason that Karen Rose remains one of my all time favourite authors and books like Edge of Darkness really serve to highlight those reasons. Part of the Cincinnati series, Edge of Darkness features some of our favourite characters from past books, kooky siblings Dani and Deacon, Faith, the O'Bannion brothers etc. And this one is focused on Meredith and Adam. Meredith Fallon is a child psychologist who we met briefly in an earlier novel and after a one time affair with detective Adam Kimble she has been pining after him but unsure why he is pulling away and going out of his way to avoid her. But Adam has his reasons and demons of his own to deal with. That is until it all comes to a head when Meredith becomes the victim of a terrible crime, someone tried to shoot her and nobody knows why.

The investigation that follows is as tense and unpredictable as Karen's books always are. I think the beauty of her novels is that she doesn't even really offer any red herrings so you are literally left guessing the whole way through. I like that a lot. I've heard criticism before about the love stories that run alongside but I not only thoroughly enjoy them, I respect Karen's ability to mix them in, to merge two genres in one Romantic Suspense is what Karen has truly become the mistress of.

I think the love stories are important as well because they enable the series to run parallel with the different couples, this one has a focus on Meredith and Adam and previous ones have focused on other couples in their social group. I love that entanglement and follow on. We, as readers get to find out what happened after the happy ending and who doesn't truly want to know that?

For fans of crime, thrillers and particularly for the genre Romantic Suspense, this is a fast paced, perfectly flowing, incredibly excellent novel, one of this author's best yet!

Edge of Darkness gives us a man who is fighting for both his sanity and his sobriety all while trying to track a killer who is attempting to kill the woman he cares about.

Adam Kimble had been on the edge for a while. Dealing with PTSD from the things he has seen as a Homicide detective and used alcohol to kill the pain. He met Meredith Fallon at cusp of this and has been avoiding her due to AA's recommendation of no relationship for the first year of sobriety. He knows that he's hurt her badly with not telling her the real reason he has avoided her but he wants to make her proud of him by getting that one year (typical man – if he'd just explain pretty sure she'd understand).. Well all of that's blown to hell when someone tries to kill her with a bomb.

Meredith who counsels children and adolescents who have been victimized was taking one of her clients, Mallory Martin (who fans of the series will recognize from Every Dark Corner – she was the young girl that had been held for 6 years by a the head of a child trafficking and pornography ring) out to lunch to celebrate her starting education classes. It's while at this lunch that a man approaches with a gun and bomb strapped to his chest.

As this is part of the Cincinnati series those characters play a big part in this book which is always nice to revisit previous characters. The hunt for the person responsible for orchestrating the hit on Meredith ends up leading to very large trail of bodies as the killer is trying to both cover his tracks and carry out a twisted game he started years ago.

Betrayal is the word for this book.. Want to know the who and why? Read the book (insert evil laugh here)

Edge of Darkness by Karen Rose is one of those books that I just had to keep reading. By rights I shouldn't even like it, it is full of crime, nasty crime and so many killings. However its the fight of good against evil and I know the evil is going to be eventually overcome.

I've only read two other books in this series but I want to go back and read all of them! Some day! In the meantime this was perfect and while it is part of a series it can stand alone, although it doesn't hurt to have met th

I've only read two other books in this series but I want to go back and read all of them! Some day! In the meantime this was perfect and while it is part of a series it can stand alone, although it doesn't hurt to have met the characters before. Yes there are quite a few of them. The first time I read a book in the series I jotted down names and how they are related, and hey presto now there is "no problemo".

This is the story of Adam Kimble - detective and Meredith. We'd seen Adam withdraw from his family and friends - they didn't know why and neither did the reader. In this book all is revealed as Adam becomes centre stage. Adam and Meredith are always seeking to do what is right for others, they are both wounded people and are coping with their own dysfunctions. Yet their hears are full of love, loyalty and courage.

The story ranges over about a week - it is told from the viewpoint of many - Adam, Meredith, the perpetrator of the crimes and some of the victims. For a long while we don't know who is behind the shocking things that happen and when we do find out it is to discover that greed, jealousy, callousness and evil are alive and kicking in the heart of the person who has caused such devastation.

What draws me to these books are the strong bonds that exist between all the detectives, the people who help victims as does Meredith, the newspaper team and the IT team. Bonds of loyalty, support and love are strong. I loved Meredith's grandfather, I want to see more of Diesel the IT newspaper guy who walks a fine line in terms of the law and Dani the doctor - sister of one of the detectives. The little cameos of fun and humour don't hurt either.

Fast paced, full of tension, fantastic characters and a plot that took me away from my world into another. Can't ask for more.

Karen Rose’s books are always tense and unpredictable, you never know what’s going to happen. Her books keep you on the edge of you seat till the very end and that was the very same on this book.I thoroughly enjoyed edge of darkness it has such a strong plot with a killer at large and with the emotions and feelings between Meredith and Adam I couldn’t get enough.

The beauty of Karen Rose’s novels is that she doesn’t offer any red herrings you are literally left guessing the whole way through, she blends her books so well with the main plot and romance between the two main characters, she has the ability to mix them so well.

After more than 20 books the Author still manages to capture my attention with wonderful characters and complex plots which keeps you reading until the last word on the last page and I cant wait for her next book. Karen Rose’s book always keep me hooked I can always re-read them and never get enough of them.

I had never read Karen Rose, but having heard so much about her books, I thought I would try this. It turns out this might not have been the best decision as it is the 4th in the Cincinnati series, with characters from other books in the series turning up here. It meant that at times I felt a little at a loss, not having read others in the series. Nevertheless, I still managed to enjoy reading this thriller. It turns out this might not have been the best decision as it is the 4th in the Cincinnati series, with characters from other books in the series turning up here. It meant that at times I felt a little at a loss, not having read others in the series. Nevertheless, I still managed to enjoy reading this thriller. Adam Kimble is a homicide detective who had a short lived relationship in the past with Meredith Fallon, a child psychologist. Meredith has never forgotten him and doesn't understand why he has gone to such lengths to avoid her. However, Adam is an emotionally damaged man, suffering from PTSD, and struggling to recover. He is about to discover just what Meredith means to him.

Meredith works with sexually abused children, something she feels a complete commitment to. She has been doing some intensive counselling work with a traumatised Mallory Martin. They are out celebrating their successes, when a gunman fails to carry out a mission he is being forced into. Having failed to shoot Meredith, the gunman is then shot and Meredith barely makes it out alive. Why would anyone want to kill Meredith? In a complex investigation, more deaths take place as it appears that a ruthless killer does not want Meredith to do the kind of work that she does. Adam finds that he will do anything to protect Meredith. Their relationship develops as Meredith finds out exactly what is troubling Adam. She then in turn tells him about the traumas in her own life. It soon becomes clear that the murderer is rather closer to home than Adam and Meredith might imagine.

This is a fast paced read focusing on two damaged people who manage to connect with each other emotionally. Whilst this might not have been the best Karen Rose book to read, I am glad that I did read it. It has two central strands running through it, that of the hunt for the killer, and that of the slowly evolving relationship between the two protagonists. A gripping read that I found entertaining and absorbing. Many thanks to Headline for an ARC.

    4 and a half

This carries on the segment that this author has involved her readers in set in and around Cincinnati and honestly I somehow suspect that several of these characters will be revisited no matter what the synopsis says. Why do I feel this? Well honestly there are just so many characters involved here that the author would be crazy not to go back at some point and flesh them out more. That's also unfortunately why I knocked a half mark off as because it's such an ensemble piece I did in

Why do I feel this? Well honestly there are just so many characters involved here that the author would be crazy not to go back at some point and flesh them out more. That's also unfortunately why I knocked a half mark off as because it's such an ensemble piece I did initially find myself trying to remember who had done what before and in which book so it kind of took me out the story at times.

That all being said what about the story? Well it was lovely to see the old gang rally round with their protective and so very often teasing attitudes. As a fan of this series I knew that Adam struggled with events that were truly harrowing but those around him don't truly realise just how low he's driven himself. To be blunt he's a recovering drunk in love with a woman that he feels he doesn't deserve but Meredith doesn't quite fit on the pedestal that Adam has placed her on .

Everything comes crashing to a head when it appears there's a target painted on Merediths back. It all ties in with the young woman that Meredith and her friends are trying to introduce back into normal life after abysmal abuse but the trouble is there are other victims still out there with a killer determined to silence all those loose ends !

Essentially this is the tale of two damaged people connecting at what is a violent and frightening time in their lives . The author pulls her readers in with scenes from the point of view of her villain which really ramps up the intensity of the plot . It's positively frightening that such evil perpetrators can pose as essentially normal everyday folks but I get that surely that's why psychopaths can and do live undetected amongst us . I loved following the trail laid down in order to uncover just who the bad guy was but most of all I really enjoyed catching up with characters that have drawn me in previously and for this reader that meant quality time with Deacon ! However it's not as dark as some previous stories and the author found time for lighter moments as her cast teased, cajoled and knitted !

This voluntary take is of a copy I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair

This book main focus is Dr Meredith Fallows and Detective Adam Kimble, Adam has been dealing with PTSD for the last year due to witnessing a horrendous crime against a child. Now Adam has to solve why some would want to blow up the woman that he has secretly been in love with for the past year Meredith Fallows. Meredith now has to find out why someone would want her dead, without breaking her patients confidentiality. When Adam delves more into to the case, things aren't as they seem and things that shouldn't connect.

One of the reason that I love Karen Rose book are her characters, they have there are flawed but they try their best with the life they have. It makes the character more real to me and I end up getting more invested.

One of my favourite character is Diesel, he might not look like a softy but he really is with a wicked sense of humour. I can’t wait for him to get his own book. Meredith and Adam are an amazing couple but unfortunately they weren't my favourite pairing is this book, that award goes to Diesel and Meredith Grandfather. The banter between the two of them really made me smile, and both just show do not judge a book on it cover.

I find Karen Roses writing styles one of the easiest for me to read, the book flows in my head like a conversation that I don’t want to end.

This story follows on from the last book Ever Dark Corner, and certain things that where left open in the last book get wrapped up in this. To me this make the stories more realistic as crimes in life doesn’t always end up wrapped up tidy little bow.

Like other Karen Rose book, this book is a crime fighting, emotional rollercoaster with heart pounding romance.

Thank you to Netgalley and Headline for giving me an advance copy to read and review, I will still be buying myself a copy to go on my Karen Rose shelf.

I give this book 5 out of 5
