The Silver Mask

A generation ago, Constantine Madden came close to achieving what no magician had ever achieved: the ability to bring back the dead. He didn't succeed . . . but he did find a way to keep himself alive, inside a young child named Callum Hunt. Now Call is one of the most feared and reviled students in the history of the Magisterium, thought to be responsible for a devastatin...

Just finished book 3. Give me this one already? This will have spoilers for those who have not read the third book, so beware, you have been warned.

I don't think Aaron will stay dead. Perhaps he will die again at the end of the series, but his role in the series seems too important for him to die now. I don't think Aaron will stay dead. Perhaps he will die again at the end of the series, but his role in the series seems too important for him to die now. My theory for now is that Call will attempt to bring Aaron back, but unlike Constantine, will succeed. But Aaron might not be too happy about this. Perhaps Call will also start remembering small things from his past life. I am curious about Constantine Madden's youth.

I am really curious about what will happen next. Will Aaron come back in some way? Will Call attempt to bring him back? Will the loss of his best friend make him become more like the original enemy? The third book was darker than the first two, and I think this one will be even darker. There are so many plot options! I want it. Like, now. But I guess I'll have to wait. Again.

The title has been changed from the Golden Boy to the Silver Mask. Because the plot changed? The Golden Boy is Aaron. He was described as the golden boy in book three. But he died. Does that mean he didn't die in the original outline? (Or at least not this early?) And what about the silver mask? Does it refer to Constantine Madden's mask? Will Call find it? Does it have special magic uses, perhaps?

3.5 stars rounded up for a good finish.

It's been a few months since we listened to

and waited for The Silver Mask to be released. In that time my kids seemed to have lost a bit of their momentum with the series and their interest in listening to the audiobook in the car waned about halfway through. No matter, I thought, I'll just read the rest on my own.

Well as it turns out this book improved for me quite a bit by being read rather than listening to the audiobook. The story is quite dark, and I never felt like the narrator used a completely suitable tone. In any event, I quite enjoyed the rather scary and depressing end to this book and am quite looking forward to the final installment in the series, due out next year.

This is simply a mini review for two reasons. One, I got my wisdom teeth out on Thursday and am still getting back on my feet fro it. Two, this is the fourth book in a series and since I enjoy keeping my reviews spoiler free a mini review was the best way to conduct this.

To start off; what a disappointment. I’ve been reading this for five days and it was in no way worth this. It was classic middle book syndrome where basically nothing happens. With the book being as short as it is, it seriously needs something to keep you around. However, The Silver Mask really fails to do that for me. If you’ve seen my other reviews you may know I really enjoyed the first three books of this series. That’s what makes this particular one such a sad tale.

I can’t really tell you what happened throughout this book. The ties of friendship that are so common throughout the others are almost missing. This book is solely about Call and his personal journey through the events that occurred in book three. Unfortunately, I don’t think that was enough to be a full book by itself.

The romance really jumped out of nowhere, too. I was quite shocked by it (though it could have been my wisdom teeth drugs).

All in all, this is still a really good middle-grade series and I will be reading the final book when it releases. Just very disappointed that this book and I didn’t mesh well.

Also, I apologise for how short this review is but I need to do some more packing and nap because these tablets make me drowsy as all hell.

    3.5!

Devo dire che come trama penso sia il migliore dopo il primo, finalmente la saga si è un po’ ripresa!

Però... il romance. No. Ma proprio no.

Ho apprezzato molto l’amicizia fra Callum ed Aaron, come sempre. Ed anche Subbuglio <3

Jasper mi è sembrato davvero troppo infantile e quasi inutile. Tamara ha perso l’energia dei precedenti libri.

Bel finale, però! Sono curiosa di leggere l’ultimo libro.
